So difficult to say farewell to MTA 2020 (talmidim from Australia and South Africa) at the end their year In The Gush. Allow us to get emotional for a moment: MTA 2020 arrived in the Yeshiva in February of 2020. When the Corona Virus hit Israel at the end of February of 2020 - they had only been in the Yeshiva for a month. And yet, they were some of the very first overseas talmidim to return to Eretz Yisrael - some traveling more than 40 hours to get back. In the words of their Rebbe, Rav Pini Cohen, they have been on fire - learning, diligent, inspired and working hard ever since their return. Chasdei Hashem, many are staying In The Gush for another year - MTB! Let us take a moment at this time to recognize and salute their courage and commitment to Talmud Torah.
BE IT BY ZOOM OR IN PERSON,
HAR ETZION RABBANIM MAKE THE EFFORT
TO REACH THEIR TALMIDIM -
EVEN TO FAR AWAY ARMY BASES!

Excited to open Elul Zman at yeshiva!
The yeshiva staff has prepared for the new school year while thinking hard about solutions that would meet the challenges of Corona. As part of these preparations, great efforts have been made to bring in students from abroad and isolate them on the yeshiva campus. About two weeks ago, the first group of talmidim arrived in Israel, going straight to solitary confinement until Rosh Chodesh morning (Thursday Aug 20th). The shana bet students who arrived at the yeshiva early chose this in order to start the Elul zman after isolation, and will be able to study in the beit midrash while maintaining all guidelines (capsules, etc.). They have now been joined on campus by another 66 talmidim, entering their two weeks of isolation. An article was published about the assessments and preparations that were made, including an interview with Rabbi Eli Weber, head of our William Major Program for Overseas Students.
Praying for all those who need healing, sending comfort to those who are grieving, and courage for all those in need. Praying for the safe 're-entry' of our entire extended Gush family, Am Yisrael and Humanity. Link to the article >>

THE MAKING OF THE GUSH
A Special 4-Part Series by Rosh HaYeshiva Rav Yaakov Medan
on 'Who We Are'
The Founding of the Yeshiva, The Crying Baby Story and its Ideological Meaning; The Tanach Revolution; The Development of Rav Amital's Approach to Religious Zionism; The Differing Impacts of Rav Kook zt"l and Rav Soloveitchik zt"l on our Yeshiva
Sunday, the 27th of Tammuz marked the tenth anniversary of the passing of Moreinu veRabbeinu Harav Yehuda Amital zt"l.
On Shabbat Parashat Matot-Maseo, more than a hundred lessons were given in Israel and in the Diaspora by yeshiva alumni and talmidim of the rav. These lessons were kicked off by Rav Yuval Cherlow, in a zoom session on Friday 7/17 at 5pm (Israel time) on the subject: 'Not Everything is Halakha' - the Moral Teachings of our Teacher and Rabbi".
In light of the special situation, we held a memorial on Sunday, 27th of Tammuz (19.7), from 6pm to 7pm (Israel time) via live broadcast from a special studio set up for this event. Included will be a broadcast from the cemetery and the beit midrash, an open studio with the heads of the yeshiva, conversations with alumni about their relationship with Harav Amital and his influence on their lives, as well as a special film produced for the event describing Harav's philosophy.
The memorial was broadcast here on the website, and on the Yeshiva's YouTube channel. Here is the complete schedule...

GEMARA, TANAKH, PHILOSOPHY,
ALL FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME!
Thursday June 11th, we commemorated the 38th Memorial Day to Zecharya Baumel, which in many ways is his first Memorial Day. Last year, the anniversary was too close to the burial to properly mark it while sitting with family members. This year, the family has requested a memorial service in the Beit Midrash. This request is a right and a duty.
In light of the instructions, the memorial was held by zoom. In addition to the excellent speakers in the schedule, one of our graduates (Samson Steinmetz) who was a dear friend to Zecharya shared memories.
All those who Zecharya's story touched over the years are invited to take part in the memorial service. It is another step in entering the accepted memory channels after his tragic fate prevented him from doing so. The recording has been uploaded to our youtube channel.

We were delighted to resume the teaching of all our remaining Yeshiva students this week. The Beit Midrash received significant reinforcement upon the return of shiurim alef, dalet and heh, as well as students of Kollel, all settling into their designated areas.
The dorms and general grounds were also divided into areas marked by different colors. The gradual return is monitored according to strict guidelines and procedures set by the yeshiva. Watch here Harav Medan's emotional sicha upon their return.
With joy and thanksgiving, the yeshiva opened its doors this week to our Shana Bet students. The return is being done gradually and in accordance with strict guidelines and procedures. The Beit Midrash has been divided into three areas using nylon partitions. The entrance to the beit midrash is conducted through three entrances according to an orderly division. We are all hoping that the trend of improvement will continue and that more talmidim will be able to come back. Watch here Harav Medan's emotional sicha upon their return.

We are in the midst of a heavy battle—and this demands much patience and a deep breath. Everyone has suggestions regarding how the government should function. Now is not the time for suggestions; there is a government, and now is the time to stand behind it, supporting and strengthening it. I remember when there were missiles from the north, and the [enemies] knew that they could not defeat the IDF, but they thought that the home-front would be easy to defeat. It is very important that those who seek to harm us are proven wrong about our home-front. We need to strengthen everybody, and send a clear message to those that seek to harm us that the people of The State of Israel are strong and mighty. This demands that we rise and assist the cities of the South. The Yeshiva has already done so by volunteering to host families from the South. Our responsibility is to “hug” those at the front lines and strengthen them. Here, in The Gush we learn Torah and it is important to continue to learn Torah, but we need to hear the cry of our brothers in the South as well. We continue to pray that Hashem will redeem the Nation of Israel.

The rabbi, who so loved the city, merited a street named after him; yishar koach to his student, who was privileged to promote this worthy and moving commemoration.

An Incredible Opportunity to Understand
the Tefillot of Yom Kippur
For many, the most difficult part of the יום כיפור davening is the עבודה, also known as אמיץ כח - a long, detailed and intricate description of the process that the כהן גדול would go through on יום כיפור.
After many years of giving his shiur on ליל יום כיפור about אמיץ כח, Rav Pini has published a book which takes the reader through אמיץ כח, bringing the sources (both תורה שבכתב and תורה שבעל פה) for, and giving context to, each and every stage, from beginning to end.

What's Happening in Israel
Visits to Har Etzion by the most elite instructional institution in the IDF - The IDF Command and Staff College ("Pum") - seem to have become a tradition. Brigadier General Commander Noam Tivon explains why: "I consider Rav Medan a leader, an ideological leader, but also a leader who seeks ways to build bridges, and therefore it is so important to hear him."

There is a chilling symbolism in the death of our alumnus Rabbi Elyashiv Knohl on the 5th of Iyar. Rav Knohl was born a few months after the fall of Gush Etzion, while his father, Dov Knohl, one of the founders of Gush Etzion, was captured by the Jordanians. Rav Knohl merited to take part in the renewal of Gush Etzion post 1967, and among other things, served as the rabbi of Kfar Etzion.
But beyond the national symbolism, Rabbi Elyashiv was both a scholar and a wonderful man, pleasant and welcoming, loving peace and pursuing peace, loved by people and certainly beloved by Hakadosh Baruch Hu. His book "Man and Woman" was a must-have for each couple before their wedding, explaining in detail the halachic foundations between man and wife, in such a way as to suit his Torah greatness and pleasant personality.

"Some people’s Torah is to be found in their books, for others, in their lives,” my late, revered teacher, Rav Yehuda Amital once shared with me.
BACK IN PRINT!!
In this volume, Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein explores the development of the religious personality. He advocates a life centered on the service of God, but recognizes multiple paths to this goal. Acknowledging that both the Jewish value system and human experience are multifaceted, he examines the relevant issues from an unusually wide perspective.
Rabbi Lichtenstein’s essays reflect not only a staunch commitment to Halakha and a firm grounding in rigorous Torah study, but also a deep spirituality, a profound moral sensitivity, and a keen awareness of both the challenges and opportunities of modernity. While being enlightened by Rabbi Lichtenstein’s penetrating analyses and wide-ranging learning, the reader will also be inspired by the beauty of his vision of the religious life.
