This year marks the 30th yahrzeit of Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, who passed away on Taanit Esther, 13 Adar Bet 5746. What follows are Rav Aharon Lichtenstein’s impromptu remarks to the yeshiva upon learning of Rav Moshe Feinstein’s passing.
Woe to us for we are shattered...
“Differences of opinion are welcome, they do not pose a danger and threat. Rabbi Yaakov Medan, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, objects to the Tanakh Project 929 on principle, and nevertheless he writes an article for them. This week is the week to promote constructive debate, and there is no better example of that culture of debate in the Jewish tradition.” [Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin Feb 14, 2016]
“This piece is written by an avid opponent of 929... But love covers all crimes. My great appreciation of Rav Benny Lau and his love for Israel lead me to give up my principles which I hold dear and support his principles, with my writing this article." [Harav Yaakov Medan Feb 13, 2016].

Remembering Harav Aharon zt"l - by Rav Avraham Stav
On my first Tisha Ba’av at Yeshivat Har Etzion, I couldn’t understand who had brought their child to the reading of Eicha and left him in the Beit Midrash despite the fact that he would cry out every few minutes.
It took me some time to understand that the cries were coming from Rav Aharon Lichtenstein, ztz”l, and from that point on the tremulous reading of Eicha by Rav Medan, combined with the heart-wrenching cries of Rav Lichtenstein, became a deep spiritual experience that I never missed.
After midday, Rav Lichtenstein, even at age 80, would give a deep analytic Shiur for two pure hours, comparable in its beauty only to the night of Yom Kippur.
Many were confused, and asked: “But it’s prohibited to learn Torah on Tisha Ba’av!” And they gave all sorts of answers, reasons, and justifications. But for anyone who heard Rav Lichtenstein’s cries at morning Kinnos, this question never was really troubling.

TIKUN LEIL SHAVUOT IN MEMORY OF MOREINU
HARAV AHARON LICHTENSTEIN ZT"L
We are all mourning the passing of Moreinu veRabbeinu Harav Aharon Lichtenstein zt"l, who taught us the ways of Torah and the ways of life. Rav Lichtenstein was taken from us during the days of Sefirat HaOmer, the period during which we prepare ourselves for receiving the Torah. More than ever before, this year we feel the urgent need to fortify ourselves with his teachings and his legacy, in a united fashion.
We appeal to you to take part in a global Tikkun Leil Shavuot that we have initiated in memory of Moreinu Harav Lichtenstein zt”l. In the framework of this initiative, each participant will dedicate divrei Torah, whether a talk, a class, or a private Torah study session, in memory of Rav Lichtenstein, and thereby spread the teachings of Torah and Yir’at Shamayim to which Rav Lichtenstein dedicated himself his entire life.

Yehi Zichram Baruch.
In light of the terrorist attack this past week in a synagogue which killed 4, including Rabbi Moshe Twersky HY"D, grandson of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Rav Amnon Bazak pointed out the utterly tragic yet painfully relevant passage in Rabbi Soloveitchik's "Kol Dodi Dofek - Listen, My Beloved Knocks" (1956). In this passage, Rabbi Soloveitchik is explaining the 6 "knocks" (blessings) granted to us by God through the State of Israel. The fifth "knock" includes the following passage:
"The fifth knock of the Beloved is perhaps the most important. For the first time in the annals of exile, Divine Providence has amazed our enemies with the astounding discovery that Jewish blood is not cheap!... God did not seek honor and recognition. He wanted Pharoah, Moses' contemporary, to know that he must pay a high price for his edict that "Every male child born shall be cast into the river" (Exodus 1:22), His present desire is that the blood of Jewish children who were slain as they ** recited the eighteen benedictions of the daily [Amidah] prayer ** shall also be avenged. When God smote the Egyptians, He sought to demonstrate that there will always be accountability for the spilling of Jewish blood."

THE GREATEST TORAH IS THAT
WHICH IS CONNECTED TO REALITY
- Rav Jonathan Ziring, a member of the Kollel Gavoah
When studying Talmud, it’s easy to be desensitized to the real-life implications of even the most sensitive issues — rape, for example.
So, as we at Yeshivat Har Etzion study the third chapter of the Talmudic tractate Ketubot, a chapter devoted to the crimes of rape and seduction, it’s easy to forget (especially when using the Hebrew terms) that “ones u-mefateh” are not just legal categories, but traumatic events that affect real people.
To combat that, my yeshiva arranged two presentations to ensure that I and the other students fully grasp what’s at stake in discussions of rape and sexual assault.
ANNOUNCING A NEW HAR ETZION INITIATIVE:
Gush Remote!
Yeshivat Har Etzion is proud to announce Gush Remote, a new long-distance chavruta service, in which you can learn in chutz la’aretz with a Gush Kollel fellow via Skype, PolyCom, or Google Chat.
This will be a great way to continue or refresh your relationship to the yeshiva while tapping into the tremendous resource that is the Yeshivat Har Etzion Kollel.
This is an opportunity to have a high-level chavruta to tackle some iyun or bekiut learning, or to learn an obscure masekhet that you always wanted to learn but couldn’t find an appropriate chavruta. You can also learn an area of Tanakh, halakha, or machshava that you want to delve into with a chavruta.
This is your chance to have a consistent chavruta before work, during your lunch break, or on weekends.
Chavrutot can be in English or Hebrew. There is also the availability for women in chutz la’aretz to learn with the women in the Migdal Oz advanced Talmud study program.
Contact Yonatan Shai Freedman at YFreedman@etzion.org.il to arrange the logistics of your chavruta and to find you an appropriate chavruta for your schedule and what you want to learn.
